Pepper export brings great value to suppliers because of the continual growth of the market for pepper spending in recent years. Nowadays, Vietnam, Brazil, and Indonesia are leading countries that have big pepper exports annually.
Vietnam is leading in pepper export with the biggest pepper export volume worldwide (232,000 tons).
Pepper is mostly grown in Vietnam’s central regions, with concentrations in the following provinces: Daklak, Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai, Dak Nong, Gia Lai, Ba Ria Vung Tau… The soil conditions (soil, weather) in Vietnam are ideal for growing pepper plants. As a result, it is a significant advantage with significant export potential. The main export goods of Vietnam are black pepper and white pepper, which account for just around 10-15% of total production output.
Vietnam pepper exports reached 212,983 tons with a value of 719.2 million USD in the first nine months of 2021; however, compared to the same time in 2020, export volume declined by 3.2 percent while income climbed by 47 percent. Pepper export turnover in the first nine months of the year topped the $ 660.6 million achieved in the entire year of 2020, thanks to a high price increase. With recent pepper price increases, Vietnam’s pepper business is likely to become a billion-dollar export item this year.
Pepper from Vietnam exports to most markets has grown positively both in terms of volume and value. The main markets of Vietnamese pepper are the US, UAE, India, and Pakistan… With 46,653 tons worth 169.6 million USD, the United States is the top pepper export market, rising 9.7% in volume and 59.7% in value over the same period previous year. Over the same period, exports to the UAE increased by 37 percent in volume and 115.9% in value, totaling 13,615 tons worth USD 47.4 million. The amount of pepper sold to India climbed by 1.6 percent, while Pakistan had a 12.6 percent increase and the Netherlands saw a 20.5 percent increase… According to predictions, Vietnam’s pepper exports will exceed 300,000 tons in the future years, worth about $1 billion.
Brazil’s pepper export volume has climbed again due to greater supply from the new harvest. Black pepper is the most popular pepper in Brazil.
According to the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade, and Services (MDIC) of Brazil, Brazil’s pepper exports were 61,845 tons in the first nine months of the year, down 8.7% from the same period last year. However, thanks to an increase in export prices of more than 1.5 times in the last 9 months (average of 2,987 USD/ton by Delivery form FOB), export turnover climbed by 38.4% to 184.3 million USD.
In terms of the export market, Brazil’s pepper exports to the United States and Vietnam have been declining, while shipments to Germany, Pakistan, and, particularly, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have expanded significantly in the first 9 months.
According to Indonesia’s Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the country’s pepper exports totaled 3,167 tons in August, bringing the total amount of export pepper for the year to 26,273 tons, down 9.5 percent from the same period in 2020. In the first eight months of this year, white pepper accounted for over half of Indonesia’s pepper exports (12,413 tons), while whole-grain black pepper accounted for the other third (9,701 tons).
The two main pepper consumption markets in Indonesia are Vietnam and China. However, in the first eight months of this year, both import volumes from these countries fell by 25.6 percent and 36.7 percent, respectively, to 5,741 tons and 4,404 tons. The reason for this is that the outbreak lasted a long period, reducing the need for pepper at large restaurants. Indonesia’s pepper exports to the Netherlands, Germany, and India, on the other hand, surged considerably.
